Coast Cup on Home Turf

It's nice to be back in Whistler and racing on the home snow.  It's actually amazing to be home and skiing with such great conditions.  When the team left, it was pretty barren and grim so it's great to come back to some beautiful skiing.

Today was the first of two Coast Cup races in Whistler this weekend.  Today's event was a 13.2 km classic event.  Coast Cups are designed to promote skiing amongst the youth of the local clubs and areas, and this was evident on the start lists: the competition within in the Junior Men and Open Men categories was pretty slim and trim.  Of the 5 Junior Men, 4 of them were from CVTC.  Five of the 9 open men racers were from CVTC.

Nonetheless, it's good to get out and clean the travel cobwebs out of the body.  It was a showdown on the trails with Colin Foley taking a commanding (1 minute) win in the Junior Men category.  Sam Morris was second (just under a minute back, and Andrew Avis and Liam Patterson rounded out the top four.

In the Open Men category, sprinter Sebastian Dandurand rediscovered his distance skill and took with win by 4 seconds over Martin Schrama and 14 seconds up on Geoffrey Richards.  Paul Dupuis and Ben Osorio were 4th and 6th, respectively.

Tomorrow's event is a free technique team sprint.  Results will be posted at www.zone4.ca.
