Yannick's Favourite Place to Ski

As competitive nordic skiers we travel to many different locations every year to race and train. These locations tend to be considered the nicest places in Canada, and they very well may be. But choosing one of these venues as a favorite is hard since most of the time we never get a chance to explore outside the “race course”. Many of us have have different ideas of the best place to ski and that is completely normal since some live in little mountain towns with trails outside their doors and others live in big cities where skiing is confined to a small hill. But I think I can speak for a lot of skiers when I say that the Silverstar and Sovereign Lakes area is my favorite place to ski.

Silverstar is a medium sized alpine ski resort located 20 minutes up the road from the nice city of Vernon which lays 900 meters lower. The climate and the altitude gives Silverstar plenty of snow in the early season, it then becomes a perfect place to hold the first races and or have a training camp. I have been there four times now and it has always been amazing to ski the trails, there are just so many choices and they are all interesting. One reason that this place is my favorite place to ski is because of the trail network. Behind almost every house there is a groomed trail that you can get on to and ski to anywhere you please. You can start at the base of the alpine area and ski a trail called Paradise all the way to the top and then down to the Sovereign World Cup trails. It truly has everything you want in a ski area.

Many people may agree with me on this but some may say that they prefer the skiing in Canmore, Whistler, and even Gatineau Park, but for me it's Silverstar. I will always be happy to go back there.
